If I were Maori myself, I believe I would feel that the random insertion of Maori words and phrases into not just everyday vernacular, but official government documents is little more than virtue signaling tokenism.
I look forward to APANZ’s next report on treating skeletal girls with gym memberships and liposuction treatments because who are we to say that they are not fat when they look in a mirror and turn away from themselves in obese horror. Why are we spending any money on efforts to stop people from taking their own lives? If they feel they have nothing to live for, well surely people "know themselves" better than any therapist ever could?
And when it comes to erasing women, have you noticed that this is a single "gender" thing? Men have prostate cancer groups, but only those with a cervix get support for cervical cancer. Too bad that so many "people" haven't got a clue whether or not they have a cervix and may be too embarrassed to ask. By "including" everyone in inappropriate ways, real women who need care are actually excluded. https://lucyleader.substack.com/p/the-problem-with-adding-more-ink
I think many Maori are realising that commonalising their language is not in the best interests of its reinvigoration and continuation after all. Many haven't caught up with that yet, either.
Yes, there are therapists who do seem to pick and choose what they bullshit about - and, no, men are not being robbed of their language like women are.
Excellent article, Katrina. I worry most about young men who are not as inurred to contagion as we ol’ biddies are. Thanks for all you do to keep us updated. 💚🤍💜
I did wonder - lol! Yes, young women will be the ones who suffer the most at the loss of women’s language, because they won’t have a memory of it. Once again, they will just be ‘men with differences’ and lose their uniqueness.
I often consider the irony that now that the medical establishment has just recognised that women are different to men, (and not just weaker and slightly faulty versions of men), a philosophy comes along that states that sex is immaterial and irrelevant (meaning that it can be "chosen" in the same way as you can choose your outfit for the day).
Appearances don't influence biology or physiology, and you can't acquire "authenticity" from a shonky practitioner who believes in gender fairies.
Aidan O'Neill KC in presenting the case for For Women Scotland last week in the Supreme Court went back to the bad old common law days when women weren't even seen as people. Over the last century and a half (longer even?) women have fought to obtain the vote, the right to own property, and ultimately the right to not be discriminated against because of their sex and the right to single sex spaces. Then they rested on their laurels for five minutes before (some) men and their handmaidens started erasing them all over again!!
The patriarchy is not going to give up that easily!!!!

That should have read young women. Bloody predictive text!
