New Zealand’s hate speech laws get kicked to the kerb; Rex Landy makes the news; and the woman who got trespassed from a supermarket for wearing a truth-telling t-shirt tells her story.

New Zealand’s proposed hate speech laws have been thrown in the bin. The current Minister for Justice, Paul Goldsmith, announced on 21st Mar24 that they were a gone-burger. Most NZers breathed a collective sigh of relief at the abandonment of the monster hate speech laws would inevitably become, despite the good intentions behind them. Not all saw it like that though, and some likened the abandonment to enabling another attack against Muslims, such as we saw in
If it wasn't for you, Rex. Philippa and some other terfs over there I'd be very happy to renounce my NZ citizenship.....though, frankly, not that our situation is anything to be proud of here. (I was born in Whangarei and had dual citizenship since 1989. If it wasn't for my my Aussie hubby flatly refusing I would have "gone home" to retire)
Thrilled for you in NZ. Here in Scotland, our hate crime law is due to go into force on April 1st. It’s expected to be unworkable in real life, but it’s probably going to badly mess up some innocent people’s lives before it gets repealed. For that reason it’s about as popular as cold sick with most of the public (the exceptions being the zealots who wanted it in the first place).
It was a highlight of my day. I mean, if the assoc min Education can get spat at/menaced then all's fair. Terrific about the 'dumb as' so-called hate speech laws.
Trans disciples in Scotland can barely contain themselves in anticipation of their ascension to glory when ‘I hate you law’ comes into practice. In Edinburgh there are several voluntary hubs (cafes, indie shops, bookstores) who have signed up to be ‘reporting space’ where complainants are given a pre-printed form to report the crime of not doing what you’re told. 🤢
Love Rex, eff word and all. :)
