It all started on the 90’s when I worked in public service, I remember we were recruiting the panel needed a Māori staff rep or kuamatua to sit there and say nothing. Then we were encouraged to employ Māori and Pacifica when recruiting we used to call it the tick. It’s been going on for years, I’ve even worked with staff with impairments that have had additional staff employed to support them. I’m all for jobs for people with the skills and knowledge and experience but when it come to the great hiring tick it’s nepotism and sad really to think some people get their jobs to meet quotas imagine being one of the DeI hires it would be awful.
The rot has been spreading for some time, obviously, and now it’s coming to the surface. It seems that the fact a workplace is not a kindergarten got lost sight of. Whilst I believe avoiding too much homogeneity is a good thing, DEI has become a disaster. Every person who comes into a workplace brings more than their skills to the job. They bring their personality, beliefs, family dynamics, interests, etc, which in the past they were expected to responsibly manage in a way that didn’t affect their performance or relationship with their co-workers. Of course it wasn’t perfect, and tensions and issues did erupt, but now it seems that workers outsource the responsibility of managing who they are to their co-workers.
LOVE your work - Thank you for speaking out with such clarity and direction
Another gem Katrina. Calm truths again
