Internal airfares are not that different to fares to Melbourne or Sydney, maybe even more expensive. I can just about always get to Melbourne (or back) for $300 or less. Both directions tomorrow to Wellington are $300+

It's too expensive to go to Wellington for the day (or two).
It is, super expensive - I drive when I go, it's slower but SO much cheaper.
Need a decent train line but even then I doubt the fares would be so much different.

Mind you that has something to do with going to Queenstown or Christchurch to get to Melbourne. Maybe it's just the Dunedin part that is expensive.
